Whitespace is the most misunderstood element in web design. Clients frequently ask to "fill in the empty space." These requests reflect a misunderstanding of what whitespace does.
Whitespace is not empty. It controls where the eye goes, creates separation between elements, establishes hierarchy, and communicates quality. Reducing whitespace does not make a design more efficient — it makes it harder to read and navigate.
How whitespace creates hierarchy
The amount of space around an element signals its importance. A headline with generous space above and below reads as more important than one crowded by surrounding content. This is why high-end brands use more whitespace than budget brands.
Micro and macro whitespace
Macro whitespace is the space between major sections — margins, padding between content blocks. Micro whitespace is the space within elements — line height, letter spacing, button padding. Both matter. Macro whitespace creates page rhythm. Micro whitespace determines readability.
