How to Run a Digital Audit Before a Rebrand

A rebrand without a digital audit is a renovation without a structural inspection. Here is what to look at before you change anything.

A rebrand is one of the highest-stakes digital projects an organization undertakes. Done well, it clarifies positioning, energizes the team, and creates a platform for growth. Done poorly — or done without adequate preparation — it creates confusion, breaks existing SEO equity, and produces a visual identity that does not hold up in the environments where it actually needs to work.

The preparation that prevents most rebrand problems is a digital audit conducted before any creative work begins.

What a digital audit covers

A digital audit before a rebrand should cover four areas: search presence, content inventory, technical infrastructure, and brand asset inventory.

Search presence means understanding what the organization currently ranks for, what traffic those rankings produce, and which URLs carry the most equity. This matters because a rebrand often involves URL changes, and URL changes without proper redirects destroy search equity that took years to build.

Content inventory means cataloging every piece of content that exists across every channel: website pages, blog posts, social profiles, email templates, downloadable assets. The goal is to understand the scope of what needs to be updated and to identify content that is worth carrying forward versus content that should be retired.

Technical infrastructure

Technical infrastructure means understanding what systems the current brand touches: the CMS, the email platform, the CRM, the analytics setup, the ad accounts. Each of these will need to be updated when the brand changes, and some of them have lead times or dependencies that need to be planned for.

Brand asset inventory

Brand asset inventory means collecting every version of the current logo, every color code, every font file, every template. This inventory reveals how inconsistent the current brand is in practice — which is useful information for the rebrand brief.

The output

The output of a digital audit is not a report — it is a decision document. It should answer: what are we protecting, what are we replacing, and what are we building from scratch? With those decisions made, the creative work has a clear brief to work from.
