Managing Stakeholder Feedback on Digital Projects

Unstructured feedback is the leading cause of scope creep and timeline slippage. A simple process fixes most of it.

Feedback is necessary. Unstructured feedback is destructive. The difference between a project that finishes on time and one that runs three months over is often not the quality of the work — it is the quality of the feedback process.

The problem with open-ended review

When stakeholders are asked to review without structure, they provide whatever comes to mind — personal preference, reopened decisions, off-topic observations. All of it arrives in different formats from different people, and the project team has to sort through it.

A structured feedback process

A structured process defines: what is being reviewed, what kind of feedback is solicited, who has authority to provide binding feedback, and when feedback is due. Scoped reviews produce more useful feedback.

The consolidation rule

All feedback from a review round should be consolidated into a single document before it is sent to the project team. The client owns the consolidation; the studio acts on the consolidated output.
